2027: NBC digital switchover will create national crisis — Ohuabunwa tells Tinubu to intervene

Public Affairs Analyst Raises Concerns Over NBC’s Digital Broadcasting Transition

Public affairs analyst and businessman Godfrey Ohuabunwa has expressed serious concerns regarding the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) planned transition from analog to digital broadcasting ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a press statement released Wednesday, Ohuabunwa warned that the initiative could lead to significant national risks and potential disasters. He criticized the current approach taken by the NBC, describing it as rushed, unclear, and inconsistent with the 2012 Digital Switchover (DSO) White Paper approved by the Federal Executive Council.

Ohuabunwa pointed out that the proposed transition amounts to merely aggregating channels on NigComSat platforms, rather than achieving the comprehensive Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) migration that was originally envisioned under Nigeria’s DSO framework.

Serving also as chairman of the Association of Licensed Set-Top Box Manufacturers of Nigeria, Ohuabunwa urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene to clarify the situation created by the NBC. “Nigeria cannot afford confusion in its broadcasting system at a time the nation is preparing for another critical democratic transition,” he stated. “The time to act is now.”

The NBC had previously announced that the switch to digital broadcasting would occur in 2027.
