2027: Nigerian Govt vows to prosecute anyone tampering with citizens’ data

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has announced it will prosecute individuals who tamper with personal data in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Vincent Olatunji, the National Commissioner of the NDPC, made this declaration during an interview on Channels Television on Saturday.

His remarks reflect growing concerns about data privacy and the security of voter information amid increasing electoral activities.

Olatunji emphasized that the commission is ramping up efforts to oversee the handling of personal data by political parties and various organizations as election season approaches.

With many political parties collecting substantial amounts of voter-related data, he noted the urgency of safeguarding citizens’ personal information.

“They are collecting data of their party members. What kind of privacy safeguards and guardrails have they put in place?” Olatunji queried, underscoring potential gaps in current practices.

He further reiterated that anyone caught disclosing personal information would face legal repercussions.
