Division Among Opposition Diminishes Confidence Ahead of 2027 Elections, Says Former ADC Chieftain
A former leader of the African Democratic Congress, Salihu Lukman, expressed concern about the waning confidence of Nigerians in opposition political parties as the 2027 general elections approach. He attributed this sentiment primarily to divisions within the opposition.
Lukman made these remarks during an appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” on Friday. He criticized both the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition parties for failing to present viable alternatives to the electorate.
“Right now, Nigerians don’t have confidence in the opposition, largely because we are divided,” Lukman stated. He emphasized the need for the opposition to unite and nominate a credible presidential candidate, stating, “We don’t want to contest and end up having a coronation.”
He noted the low confidence among voters in the electoral process, warning that voter apathy could lead to increased incidents of election manipulation and rigging. “Once there’s voter apathy, incidences of election manipulation and rigging will be high,” Lukman said. He highlighted the current prevalence of vote-buying as a critical issue in the electoral landscape.
Lukman’s comments reflect broader concerns regarding electoral integrity and the challenges faced by opposition parties in Nigeria.
