PDP Condemns Attack on Former APC Chieftain in Ebonyi State
The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has publicly condemned an attack on Barrister Ifeanyi Nworie, a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who recently defected from the ruling party.
The incident occurred on Saturday in Idembia, located in the Ezza South Local Government Area. The PDP has also denounced alleged assaults against Nworie’s supporters and journalists, purportedly carried out by agents of the APC-led Ebonyi State Government.
In recent weeks, the party claims that members and supporters of the PDP have experienced a series of threats linked to the same government representatives as tensions rise ahead of the 2027 general elections.
PDP State Chairman Chukwuma Igwe indicated that the attacks were led by a former House of Representatives member and other senior officials, including a former PDP chairman from Ezza South. Igwe reported that several vehicles were damaged, and multiple individuals were assaulted with dangerous weapons, noting that eight people are currently receiving medical treatment.
“We called this press conference to draw the attention of Nigerians to the undemocratic actions intended to undermine the conduct of the 2027 general elections in Ebonyi State,” Igwe stated during a news briefing on Saturday night.
He urged security agencies to fulfill their constitutional duty to protect citizens and ensure that all residents of Ebonyi State can exercise their civic rights, including the freedom of political association.
“The PDP in Ebonyi State will not be intimidated by undemocratic forces, regardless of their origin,” Igwe affirmed.
As political activities intensify, he called on party members to maintain peace and adhere to the law. He also urged the Ebonyi State Government to respect democratic principles, emphasizing that no group holds a monopoly on violence or misconduct.
Moreover, Igwe implored security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to ensure a fair political environment for all parties in the state.
“Ebonyi State belongs to all its citizens, and every eligible voter has the constitutional right to express their political preferences free from intimidation or harassment,” he said.
The PDP has expressed its commitment to pursuing all lawful avenues to protect the rights and safety of its members in the face of these challenges.
