2027: Sowore backs return of fuel subsidy
Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress (AAC), has pledged to reinstate the fuel subsidy if he wins the 2027 elections.
In a post on his official X account on Monday, Sowore emphasized his commitment to a minimum wage of 500,000 naira per month for Nigerian workers.
“Attempts to dilute our proposal for a 500,000-naira monthly living wage with misleading statistics will not change our stance,” Sowore stated. “Under our government, Nigerian workers will earn a minimum wage they can actually live on, and we will also restore the petrol subsidy.”
The removal of the fuel subsidy has sparked widespread debate across the nation. Other presidential candidates, including Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), have indicated they would also restore the subsidy if elected. Atiku has proposed a targeted subsidy for domestic refiners.
Conversely, Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and Seyi Makinde from the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) have rejected the reintroduction of the previous subsidy model. Makinde suggested instead a reduction in domestic crude pricing for local refineries.
