Rivers: Police scrap tactical teams, launch new crime response unit

Rivers State Police Command Announces Dissolution of Tactical Teams

Port Harcourt, Rivers State — The Rivers State Police Command has officially disbanded all tactical teams operating under its jurisdiction. This decision is part of a larger initiative aimed at enhancing professionalism, operational efficiency, and public trust in law enforcement.

The directive comes from Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu. As a result of this restructuring, all existing tactical units have been consolidated into a new specialized unit known as the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU).

The VCRU is designed to provide a more coordinated and rapid response to incidents of violent crime throughout the state. According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, the unit will focus on responding swiftly and effectively to criminal threats while adhering to established rules of engagement and upholding fundamental human rights.

The police command has also issued a warning regarding misconduct, including extortion and abuse of office. Officers found in violation of the Nigeria Police Force Code of Conduct and professional ethics will face disciplinary action.

Commissioner of Police Olugbenga A. Adepoju reassured residents of the command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property. He urged the public to assist law enforcement by reporting any suspicious activities or unprofessional conduct.

In concluding the statement, the command emphasized its commitment to delivering effective, accountable, and community-oriented policing.
