Nigerian army thwarts terrorists’ plot to cause havoc in Zamfara, Katsina

Nigerian Army Conducts Successful Operations Against Terrorists in Katsina and Zamfara States

The Nigerian Army reported that troops from Sector 2, engaged in Operation Fansan Yamma, neutralized nine terrorists, including two key figures, during operations conducted from May 1 to May 3, 2026, in Katsina and Zamfara states. The operations also led to the seizure of four AK-47 rifles and nine motorcycles.

According to an official statement, troops stationed at the Forward Operating Base Fudma in Katsina State encountered militants while conducting a patrol along the Turare–Yantumaki Road in the Dutsinma Local Government Area. Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, acting deputy director of Army Public Relations for the 8th Division, indicated that during a subsequent firefight, the troops neutralized four terrorists and recovered two AK-47 rifles, along with two magazines, ammunition, two motorcycles, seven mobile phones, and a total of 153,000 naira.

In a separate operation conducted between May 2 and May 3, troops at the Forward Operating Base Bagega in Zamfara State engaged in a strategic mission in the Anka Local Government Area. This operation resulted in the neutralization of seven terrorists, including two notable figures identified as Anaruwa, the younger brother of terrorist commander Kachalla Idi Aiki, and Gomina.

The initial confrontation on May 2 began as troops engaged terrorists along the Bagega–Anka Road. Four armed militants on two motorcycles retreated during the clash, abandoning their vehicles. However, the terrorists regrouped and launched a counterattack on the Forward Operating Base Bagega. With reinforcements and precision air support, troops successfully repelled the attack, engaging eight additional terrorists on four motorcycles and neutralizing three of them. During this follow-up operation, troops recovered two more AK-47 rifles and seven motorcycles.

On May 3, the soldiers encountered two more militants on motorbikes in the same vicinity, who were also neutralized. Unfortunately, one soldier lost his life during the operations.

The army stated that it has reinforced its presence in Bagega, ensuring control of the area to deter further threats. Operation Fansan Yamma remains committed to the protection of citizens and encourages the public to report any suspicious activities to security agencies.
