Woman Arrested After Allegedly Setting Co-Wife and Children on Fire in Kano

KANO, Nigeria — A woman identified as Maryam Muhammad has been arrested after she allegedly set her 28-year-old co-wife, Firdausi Musa, and her two young children on fire late Monday night in the Hotoro area of Kano.

The incident occurred in the Mai Allo neighborhood, reportedly shocking local residents. Authorities confirmed that Muhammad is currently in custody at the Mariri Police Division.

The victims include Khadija Ya’u, 7, and Ismail Ya’u, 3, who are undergoing medical treatment. Khadija is at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, while Ismail is being treated at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Their father, Malam Saminu, suffered burns while attempting to rescue them and is also receiving care.

Buhari Musa Sa’ad, the brother of Firdausi, stated that the family received a distress call around 3 a.m. informing them of the incident. He mentioned that Firdausi had been married for less than two weeks when the alleged attack occurred.

“She is around 28 years old. The children are from her previous marriage and are stepchildren to their father, who works as a tricycle rider,” Sa’ad said.

At the time of this report, attempts to obtain a statement from the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful.
