EPL: ‘I’m so surprised’ – Rio Ferdinand on Alonso’s move to Chelsea

Rio Ferdinand Surprised by Xabi Alonso’s Move to Chelsea
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has commented on Xabi Alonso’s recent decision to take over as manager of Chelsea. Alonso, a former player for Liverpool, has signed a four-year contract to succeed Liam Rosenior at Stamford Bridge.
Ferdinand expressed surprise at Alonso’s choice, particularly given the former midfielder’s longstanding connection to Liverpool. Alonso made 210 appearances for the Reds and played a pivotal role in their 2005 Champions League triumph in Istanbul. Despite leaving Liverpool in 2009, the club continues to hold sentimental value for him.
As Alonso transitioned into coaching, speculation had mounted regarding his potential candidacy for the managerial position at Liverpool, especially with Arne Slot facing challenges this year. Following his departure from Real Madrid in January, Alonso’s name frequently surfaced in discussions about Liverpool’s managerial future.
However, Chelsea has confirmed its agreement with Alonso, marking a new chapter for the club. Ferdinand remarked on his podcast, “Rio Ferdinand Presents,” expressing that he initially believed Alonso would wait to see how Liverpool’s situation with Slot unfolded before committing to another team.
“I’m genuinely surprised he’s taken that position,” Ferdinand said. “I’m not suggesting he’s the wrong choice. The reason I’m taken aback is that I thought he would have the patience to observe how things played out at Liverpool.”
Ferdinand noted Alonso’s consistent fondness for Liverpool, suggesting that had he chosen to wait, he could have emerged as a prime candidate to succeed Slot.
“As an ex-Liverpool player, he cherished the club and always speaks positively about it,” Ferdinand said. “One would think that relationship was poised for further development.”
Looking ahead, Alonso has pledged to ensure that Chelsea competes at the highest level, aspiring to lead the club to trophy success.
