‘Dont let jealousy burn you’ – Funke Akindele replies Kunle Afolayan over remarks on cinema movies

Nollywood star Funke Akindele has responded to fellow actor Kunle Afolayan’s criticisms regarding marketing strategies for cinema movies and the emphasis on profitability. During the launch of his film “Anikulapo,” Afolayan expressed his concerns about the current cinematic landscape, stating, “There is no competition between us. I don’t just want N1 billion or N2 billion in the cinema that I won’t be able to personally receive N10 million from.” He stressed that he prefers making films that adhere to his artistic vision without relying on extensive promotional tactics.
Afolayan also voiced his challenges regarding collaborations, mentioning that he seeks to produce films without having to compromise his integrity. Speaking at the “Lagos Business of Film Summit,” he asked for alternatives to the exhausting promotional methods employed by other filmmakers, specifically noting how Akindele consistently creates skits and updates her wardrobe to boost marketing efforts. He candidly stated, “I can’t do it.”
In response, Funke Akindele shared her thoughts via Instagram, attributing Afolayan’s statements to jealousy. She urged him not to blame others for his struggles, asserting, “If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. Don’t allow jealousy to burn you. The sky is so big for everybody to fly.” Akindele emphasized the importance of individual paths to success and encouraged Afolayan to explore alternative marketing strategies or hire professional agencies.
Her remarks come amidst recognition in the industry where recent films, including those by Akindele and actress Toyin Abraham, have grossed over N1 billion and N2 billion at the box office, setting new milestones in Nollywood. Akindele’s message highlighted the need for collaboration over competition and the abundance of opportunities in the industry.
Both actors represent a vibrant sector in Nigerian cinema, steering powerful discussions around growth, profitability, and creative expression.
