Lagos: LASWA seizes 120 damaged life jackets during safety inspection
Lagos State Waterways Authority Intensifies Safety Inspections
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has increased safety enforcement measures at major ferry terminals across the state, resulting in the confiscation of 120 defective life jackets from local boat operators.
Conducted on Friday, the compliance inspection aimed to ensure adherence to waterways safety regulations and enhance operational standards within Lagos’s water transport sector.
Inspections were carried out at various terminals and jetties, including Ipakodo, Bayeku, Ijede, Ebute-Ero, Liverpool, Sabokoji, Alex, and Coconut. LASWA’s focus was primarily on evaluating the seaworthiness of vessels and ensuring compliance with life jacket safety requirements.
The authority reported the immediate withdrawal of the damaged life jackets from circulation to mitigate potential risks for passengers and other users of the waterways. While many operators adhered to safety regulations, some vessels were identified as needing repairs before they could be deemed seaworthy.
LASWA reiterated that compliance with safety standards, particularly regarding the conditions of vessels and the provision of certified life jackets, is mandatory for all operators.
The authority has also announced that enforcement operations will continue at ferry terminals and jetties throughout the state to ensure full compliance with regulations. Additionally, LASWA reminded boat operators of their legal obligation to maintain safe vessels and provide functional, approved life jackets to passengers at all times.
The agency remains committed to fostering a safer, more reliable, and properly regulated waterways transportation system in Lagos State.
