Don’t mention my name – Funke Akindele warns Kunle Afolayan

Award-winning filmmaker Kunle Afolayan recently shared details about a tense phone call with actress and producer Funke Akindele, following backlash from his comments regarding film promotion strategies in Nollywood. During an interview with Arise News, Afolayan recounted the incident, revealing that Akindele called him after he made remarks about colleagues who use dance-driven campaigns to promote their films. He claimed that his comments were not intended as a criticism of her or anyone specific, but acknowledged that they created a stir.
In the call, Akindele expressed her displeasure, reportedly yelling, “I know you don’t like me, but don’t mention my name in your interviews,” before abruptly hanging up. Afolayan responded to her outrage by emphasizing that he has always viewed Akindele as a sister and that their relationship has been longstanding and professional. He mentioned their past connections, noting that they had known each other since their university days at the University of Lagos, where he would visit her hostel, and her sister was also his friend.
Afolayan seemed perplexed by Akindele’s reaction, indicating that he did not understand why she was upset. He underscored the importance of their friendship and expressed confusion over the situation, asserting that there was no animosity between them. This incident sheds light on the dynamics and sensitivities present within the Nigerian film industry, particularly in how public comments can impact personal relationships. Overall, Afolayan maintains that he values his rapport with Akindele despite the recent misunderstanding.
