Women’s Champions League: Barcelona secure final quarter-final spot

Manchester City kept their grip on top spot by beating St Polten in their penultimate group game on Thursday night.

Captain Alex Greenwood was taken off on a stretcher in the first half before Lily Murphy opened the scoring in the second period.

Barcelona joined City in the last eight with their 3-0 win at Hammarby – ending the Swedish side’s hopes of progressing.

There will now be a showdown in Spain on 18 December to see who tops the group.

If Barca beat City then both sides will be locked on 15 points, so top spot will be decided by their head-to-head record.

That would mean City, who won 2-0 against Barca earlier in the campaign and lead their rivals by three points, will finish top if they win, draw or lose by only one goal.
