Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike has urged Nigerian youths to view leadership as a means of service rather than personal enrichment. Speaking at the 36th Convocation of the University of Port Harcourt, Wike emphasized that the future of Nigeria relies on leaders who prioritize public interest over self-gain.

“Leadership is service. It is not an avenue for self-glorification, but a covenant with the people,” Wike said during his address to the graduating students.

He cautioned that corruption, abuse of office, and self-interest have significantly weakened national institutions and hindered development. Wike challenged the graduates to embody qualities of courage, integrity, and accountability in their future roles as leaders.

“The true leader does not ask, ‘What do I gain from this office?’ but rather, ‘What do the people gain from my stewardship?’” he stated.

Wike concluded by asserting that the effectiveness of leadership should be measured by its positive impact on individuals and the enduring institutions it helps to create.
