Truck drivers block Lagos-Ore-Benin Highway over alleged police extortion

Traffic Disruption on Lagos/Ore/Benin Expressway Due to Protest by Truck Drivers
LAGOS — Traffic was significantly disrupted along the Lagos/Ore/Benin Expressway on Wednesday as truck drivers blocked the Oniparaga section of the highway. The drivers are protesting alleged extortion by police officers in Ondo State.
The blockade resulted in severe gridlock, stranding commuters, motorists, and passengers for several hours as traffic came to a standstill. Frustrated travelers have called on authorities to intervene promptly to alleviate the difficulties faced by those caught in the congestion.
In response, the Ondo State Police Command denied any connection between the incident and allegations of police extortion. The command’s spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, characterized the circulating reports on social media as false and misleading.
Initial investigations by the police indicate that the disruption was triggered by a tanker driver who blocked the highway following a disagreement with officers conducting lawful duties. The police emphasized that the incident was unrelated to a protest against police practices.
Commissioner of Police Felix Ohagwu has ordered the immediate deployment of additional officers to the area to restore normalcy, manage traffic, and ensure the safety of all road users.
The police urged the public to disregard misinformation surrounding the incident and to rely on verified updates from official sources.
