‘You can’t be a police officer and thief, choose one’ – FCT CP warns operatives

FCT Commissioner Warns Police Against Extortion

Abuja, Nigeria — Ahmed Sanusi, the newly appointed Commissioner of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), issued a stern warning to police officers on Saturday regarding extortion practices in the capital. Sanusi’s remarks came during a strategic briefing focused on ongoing security and traffic enforcement operations in Abuja.

Sanusi emphasized that the command will not tolerate police officers engaging in extortion, particularly those targeting commercial tricycle (Keke) drivers and motorists. He asserted that complaints from the public about police misconduct have escalated, indicating a critical need for reform.

“We don’t want to hear any reports of extorting Keke riders or motorists in Abuja. If we hear it, you are a thief,” Sanusi stated. He emphasized the unacceptability of being both a police officer and an extortionist, urging personnel to make a clear choice in their professional conduct.

The Commissioner’s comments reflect a commitment to improving police accountability and restoring public trust in law enforcement within the FCT.
