‘I believe in dating within your income bracket’ – Toke Makinwa

Nollywood Actress Toke Makinwa Discusses Financial Disparity in Relationships

Nollywood actress and media personality Toke Makinwa recently addressed the issue of financial disparity in romantic relationships during an appearance on the MENtality podcast, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.

Makinwa advocated for dating within one’s financial bracket, suggesting that pursuing partners in higher income classes can lead to complications, particularly for men. She noted that many men often seek relationships with women who are financially above them, only to later criticize them as materialistic.

“I am a big believer in dating within your age and financial class,” Makinwa said. “That way, there won’t be ‘stories that touch.’ You can have a supportive partner who, even during tough times, might cook dinner with her own resources. Yet, some men may still choose to cheat on them with someone they cannot afford.”

Makinwa cautioned against men whose behavior may change following financial success. “Heaven forbid you end up with a guy who hasn’t ‘blown.’ The day he does, his true personality will emerge. That reality scares many women. Money doesn’t change people; it merely reveals their true selves. Many men mistreat women who sacrificed everything for them.”

Makinwa’s comments have sparked conversations around financial equality and its impact on relationships in contemporary society.
