‘Life easier for women than men’ – Veteran actor, Bob-Manuel Udokwu
Nigerian Actor Discusses Financial Struggles in the Industry
Veteran actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu has shared insights on the financial challenges faced by male actors in Nigeria compared to their female counterparts. In a recent interview, he attributed the disparity to the increased responsibilities that male actors often shoulder.
Udokwu expressed that, in general, life tends to be “easier” for women than for men in the industry. He emphasized that while earnings in Nollywood can be significant, many actors are burdened by numerous financial obligations that hinder their financial stability.
“The reality of the profession is often misunderstood,” Udokwu said, referencing the public reaction when late actor John Okafor sought financial assistance for medical treatment. He noted that questions regarding Okafor’s past earnings highlighted a lack of awareness about the financial pressures actors face.
Udokwu expressed his sadness over Okafor’s situation, stating, “It pained me when John Okafor fell ill before he eventually passed away. While we were trying to raise funds for his treatment, some people on social media kept asking, ‘Where is all the money he made from acting?’”
He added, “They didn’t understand the realities of the profession,” conveying a sense of frustration with the misconceptions surrounding actors’ financial lives. Udokwu also revealed that he was unaware of Okafor’s previous marriages, suggesting that personal circumstances can further complicate financial challenges in the industry.
