Police Foil Attempted Bandit Attack in Sokoto State
SOKOTO, Nigeria — Authorities in Sokoto State have thwarted a suspected bandit attack on Daraye village in the Wamako Local Government Area, resulting in the death of one suspected attacker. Police also recovered an AK-47 rifle along with 28 rounds of live ammunition.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning after security agencies received a distress call alerting them to a large group of armed individuals entering the community. The call was received at approximately 1:35 a.m., according to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ahmad Rufa’i.
In response, officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams were dispatched to assist personnel at the Wamako Divisional Headquarters.
Upon arrival, the police engaged the assailants in an extensive gun battle. The statement noted that the officers demonstrated tactical expertise, ultimately overpowering the bandits, who retreated into the forest, leaving several of their members wounded.
Subsequent searches of the surrounding area led to the killing of one suspected bandit. The recovered rifle and ammunition were found in the suspect’s possession.
The police command has increased patrols in the vicinity to reassure residents and mitigate the risk of further attacks. Nearby police divisions have also been placed on alert to intercept any fleeing suspects seeking medical assistance.
Sokoto State Commissioner of Police Hayatu Hassan Shaffa commended the officers for their courage during the operation, assuring the community that the police will continue collaborating with other security agencies to suppress criminal activity and restore peace in the state.
