Police arrest woman for attempted murder of house help in Umuahia, recover knife
Umuahia, Nigeria — The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old woman, Mrs. Nwoko Gift, for allegedly attempting to harm her 12-year-old house help with a knife.
The incident gained attention after a video of the altercation was shared on social media. The victim, identified as Miss Ebony Chimamanda, was reportedly attacked by Mrs. Gift on July 5, 2026, according to a statement from DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Command’s Public Relations Officer.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the confrontation occurred after Miss Chimamanda allegedly failed to follow Mrs. Gift’s instructions to spread clothes before she left for the market. Authorities also reported that the suspect had previously beaten and threatened the victim.
Responding to actionable intelligence, officers from the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters arrived at the scene, rescued the victim, and apprehended Mrs. Gift, recovering the weapon used in the attack.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. Upon its conclusion, Mrs. Gift is expected to be charged with attempted murder.
The Abia State Police Command condemned the suspect’s actions and urged the public to avoid similar behaviors, stating that violent conduct should be promptly reported to authorities.
