Seven Dead, 53 Injured in Jigawa State Windstorm

DUTSE, Nigeria — A severe windstorm in Jigawa State has resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to 53 others, according to officials.

Alhaji Hannafi Yakubu Fagam, Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), provided this update during a press briefing on Wednesday at the State Secretariat in Dutse.

Fagam reported that the storm impacted 5,403 households across 120 communities in 13 local government areas. Among the affected councils are Dutse, Miga, Gwaram, Birnin Kudu, Ringim, Kiyawa, Babura, Kiri-Kasamma, Buji, Kaugama, Gumel, Gagarawa, and Sule Tankarkar.

The Executive Secretary indicated that four fatalities were recorded in Dutse Local Government Area, while one death occurred each in Miga, Ringim, and Sule Tankarkar.

The windstorm also resulted in significant destruction of public infrastructure, damaging more than 47 primary and secondary schools, three hospitals, two police stations, and numerous residential buildings.

In response to the disaster, the Jigawa State Government has approved funding for emergency interventions and the distribution of relief materials to those affected. Fagam called on international development partners, national organizations, and compassionate members of the public to assist in these efforts.
