Why I signed Wizkid instead of Drake – Akon

Akon Reflects on Signing Wizkid Over Drake in 2008

In a recent interview with The Shade Room, Senegalese-American singer Akon shared insights into his decision to sign Nigerian artist Wizkid in 2008 rather than Canadian rapper Drake.

Akon revealed that he signed Wizkid through Banky W’s Empire Mate Entertainment, citing Drake’s financial demands as a significant factor. He noted that at the time, Drake was still an emerging artist and had not yet developed the sound that would later contribute to his rise as a global superstar. “He was requesting a whooping $1 million to sign for me,” Akon said.

The music executive also emphasized his role in introducing Wizkid to the American market, while acknowledging Banky W for recognizing and fostering Wizkid’s talent. “Banky W discovered Wizkid. That’s how that collaboration went. I went to Nigeria, and Banky brought me Wiz, and I’m like: ‘Bro! This kid is a star,’” Akon explained.

He further elaborated that the limited resources available to Wizkid and his team played a role in the decision to sign him, ultimately contributing to Wizkid’s breakthrough into the U.S. music scene.
