Benue: Suspected arsonists flee as security foils attack on Food Basket Brewery

Security Thwarts Arson Attempt at Makurdi Brewery
Security personnel at the Food Basket Brewery in Makurdi, Benue State, successfully thwarted an attempted arson attack early Tuesday morning.
The Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC) confirmed the incident in a statement released on February 4, 2026. According to the company, unidentified individuals attempted to breach the perimeter fence of the brewery around 4:00 a.m.
BIPC reported that the intruders gained access from the rear of the premises, near the raw materials storage area, and were allegedly carrying containers filled with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with intentions to ignite parts of the facility.
Alert security personnel detected the unusual activity and acted quickly to prevent the intrusion. Upon realizing they had been discovered, the suspects fled the scene, BIPC stated.
The company confirmed that the attempted attack caused no damage and did not disrupt operations at the brewery. BIPC commended the vigilance and professionalism of its security team for preventing what could have been a significant setback for the state-owned facility.
In the aftermath of the incident, BIPC announced it is collaborating with relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the identification and prosecution of those responsible. Additionally, the company has reinforced security measures across all its facilities to deter future incidents.
BIPC emphasized the vital role of the Food Basket Brewery and its other subsidiaries in fostering economic development and generating employment in Benue State, describing them as essential community assets.
