Federal Ministry Moves to Address Dispute at FUTA Teaching Hospital
The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare is taking new steps to resolve an ongoing industrial dispute at the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) Teaching Hospital. A meeting has been scheduled with organized labor in Ondo State to foster dialogue and restore stability within the institution.
A ministry delegation is set to visit the hospital on July 24 for a high-level engagement focused on ensuring the continuous delivery of healthcare services. The meeting will take place in the hospital’s boardroom, as noted in a letter signed by Deputy Director Festus Igbinosun on behalf of the Permanent Secretary. The Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Ondo State Chapter, has been invited to participate.
The initiative follows concerns raised by the hospital’s management regarding recurring industrial actions that have disrupted operations. This intervention comes on the heels of the Federal Government’s recent transition of the former UNIMED Teaching Hospital into the FUTA Teaching Hospital.
The transition process concluded with the biometric capture of eligible staff members for inclusion in the approved nominal roll, in accordance with a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Federal Government and the Ondo State Government on October 23, 2025.
The ministry reported that staff absorption into the Federal Civil Service was conducted according to the terms of the agreement and followed a thorough verification process involving officials from the Federal Ministries of Health and Finance, as well as the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
However, 265 workers from the former hospital were deemed ineligible for absorption into the Federal Civil Service and have been recommended for redeployment to the Ondo State Civil Service.
Biometric enrollment for the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) was conducted in Akure from June 8 to 13, 2026, with a follow-up session held in Abuja from July 9 to 13 for those who missed the initial opportunity.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, praised the Ondo State Government and its residents for their support during the transition. “The successful completion of the takeover is a product of mutual understanding and collaboration,” he said.
The ministry expresses hope that the upcoming engagement with organized labor will facilitate an amicable resolution of the ongoing issues and restore industrial peace at the teaching hospital.
