Vice President Shettima Visits Kwara Following Deadly Attack

Kwara State, Nigeria — Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Kwara State on Thursday to assess the aftermath of a violent attack that left more than 100 people dead in the Woro community of Kaiama Local Government Area.

Shettima’s visit aims to convey President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the attack are held accountable. This information was confirmed in a statement by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications.

“VP Shettima is delivering the President’s strong assurances that the Federal Government will not relent in its efforts to track down and bring the attackers to justice,” Nkwocha stated.

The Vice President’s engagement is part of broader federal initiatives to support victims and enhance security in affected regions.

Earlier on Thursday, President Tinubu received a security briefing from Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at the State House in Abuja. Following the briefing, the President authorized the deployment of an army battalion to the region and announced the launch of “Operation Savannah Shield.” This military operation aims to combat terrorism and protect at-risk communities.

On the evening of February 3, 2026, armed assailants conducted a coordinated assault on Woro and nearby Nuku. Resident accounts suggest that the attackers had previously issued threats, warning locals that they intended to “preach” or persuade them to abandon their loyalty to the Nigerian State in favor of extremist views.

The situation remains under close watch as the federal and state governments work to restore security and support affected communities.
