Micky Gray Advocates for Manchester United to Pursue Cristian Romero
Former Sunderland left-back Micky Gray has voiced his support for Manchester United to secure the signing of Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, positioning the club against competition from Chelsea and Arsenal.
Romero, an Argentine international, is reportedly looking to leave Tottenham, citing dissatisfaction with his current circumstances at the club. During a recent segment on talkSPORT, Gray acknowledged that while Romero has faced personal and professional challenges, he would be a valuable addition to Manchester United.
“I would take him to Manchester United in a heartbeat,” Gray stated. He referenced Romero’s discontent at Tottenham, noting a recent fallout that has contributed to his desire to depart. “The opportunity to pair him with Lisandro Martinez again is something the club should consider seriously.”
Gray suggested that under the guidance of manager Michael Carrick and his coaching team, Romero could refine his skills and regain his best form. “There’s no doubt he possesses quality. He’s an excellent center-back,” he added.
The future of Romero remains uncertain, as Tottenham is currently in talks with Serie A champions Inter Milan regarding a potential transfer. Meanwhile, Chelsea has recently acquired center-back Maxence Lacroix for £52 million, which could impact their interest in additional defenders. Arsenal, on the other hand, has yet to make an approach for Romero as they search for a replacement for the injured William Saliba.
At present, Manchester United has five senior center-backs on its roster. Carrick may be hesitant to increase that number, yet the impending UEFA Champions League season necessitates a larger squad to compete effectively on multiple fronts.
