APC Chairman Defends President Tinubu Against Criticism from Labour Party Candidate

Nentawe Yilwatda, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has responded to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi’s assertion that President Bola Tinubu is “tired” and should consider stepping down before the 2027 elections.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Yilwatda challenged Obi’s claims about the president’s stamina and effectiveness. He emphasized that Tinubu remains actively engaged in governance and is advancing key projects nationwide.
“Let me put it this way, especially to Obi, who claimed that Tinubu is tired—Is he going for boxing or 400 metres?” Yilwatda said. “Are you telling me that the President, who works from morning till night, is tired? These are the issues.”
Yilwatda pointed out that millions of Nigerians benefiting from the administration’s programs would not support calls for the president’s retirement. He specifically referenced the National Economic Livelihood and Empowerment Fund (NELEF), which supports students and mothers across the country.
“Are you telling me that over a million students and mothers who rely on and celebrate NELEF would wish for the President to be retired?” he asked.
The APC chairman cited ongoing infrastructure initiatives as further evidence of the government’s commitment to national development. Projects mentioned include the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the establishment of new seaports in Calabar, Akwa Ibom, Port Harcourt, Ondo, and Lagos.
“Are you telling me that people benefiting from the coastal road from Lagos to Calabar, or the five seaports, wish for the President to retire?” Yilwatda inquired.
He also highlighted the modernization of Nigeria’s aviation sector, asserting that extensive airport upgrades overseen by the Minister of Aviation illustrate the government’s investment in critical infrastructure.
“I am sure you watched the renewal of airports being upgraded by the Minister of Aviation. This and many others, even in the North,” he said.
According to Yilwatda, the government’s investments in education, transportation, maritime infrastructure, and aviation demonstrate President Tinubu’s full engagement in governance, countering claims of fatigue.
Yilwatda’s remarks follow those made by former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, who, in a recent interview with Channels TV, stated that President Tinubu lacks the capacity to lead Nigeria and called for his resignation ahead of the 2027 elections.
