Nigerian musician Peter Okoye, known professionally as Mr P, has issued a public apology following backlash over his recent comments regarding the significance of Nigerian languages.

The controversy ignited after Okoye questioned the value of these languages in a response to a follower on the social media platform X. His remark, “Who Naija language help?” prompted significant criticism online, with many users expressing their discontent.

Initially dismissive of the criticism, Okoye responded defiantly, stating, “Again and again. Who Nigerian language help? If e pain you, go hit your head for wall.” However, in light of the ongoing backlash, he later issued an apology.

On Wednesday evening, Okoye posted, “If my response to ‘Who Naija language help?’ upset some people, I apologise and take full responsibility for my words. That does not mean I hate our Nigerian languages or culture.”

He clarified that his comment was not a denunciation of any specific language, including Igbo. “At no point did I say I hate the Igbo language or Igbo culture. I said ‘Naija language,’ referring to the different languages in Nigeria, but some individuals twisted it and made it seem like I specifically mentioned Igbo. I didn’t,” he stated.

Okoye’s attempt to clarify his position comes amid heightened sensitivity around cultural issues in Nigeria.
