U.S. and Sierra Leone Launch Advanced Field Epidemiology Training Programme
The United States government, in collaboration with Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health, has initiated the Advanced Level of the Field Epidemiology Training Programme (FETP). The program aims to enhance the country’s abilities to detect and respond to disease outbreaks.
Launched on July 30, the two-year initiative is supported by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and includes a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology and Disease Control. It is designed to provide Sierra Leonean health professionals with advanced skills in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, and response strategies.
In announcing the program, U.S. officials called it a significant step forward for health security in Sierra Leone. They emphasized that the training will prepare participants to effectively detect, investigate, and control disease outbreaks.
The U.S. government expressed its congratulations to the inaugural cohort of participants, referring to them as the first group of advanced “disease detectives.”
