Lagos State Explores Advances in Healthcare Innovation
The Lagos State Government is prioritizing advancements in regenerative medicine, biomedical research, and healthcare innovation to enhance medical outcomes and promote overall health. Akin Abayomi, the state Commissioner for Health, made the announcement Saturday via a statement on his X platform. He delivered the remarks following his representation of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the African Regenerative Medicine and Longevity Summit, organized by Atunse Healthcare Limited.
During the summit, healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and investors gathered to discuss new opportunities in the healthcare sector. Abayomi emphasized the state’s commitment to fostering an environment conducive to medical innovation, ensuring that advancements translate into improved health for Lagos residents.
“The future of healthcare is not simply about treating diseases. It involves preventing illness, restoring health, and enhancing quality of life for all citizens,” Abayomi stated. He noted that fields such as stem cell science, tissue engineering, precision medicine, and biotechnology are paving the way for new treatments for previously challenging medical conditions.
However, he stressed the importance of robust health systems and responsible innovation in supporting these emerging technologies. “While we embrace advancements like regenerative medicine, we must ensure they are anchored in strong health systems,” Abayomi said.
The commissioner highlighted ongoing efforts to bolster healthcare infrastructure in Lagos through investments in digital transformation, biomedical research, and medical education. He listed several key initiatives, including the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP), Lagos Biobank, and the Lagos State University of Medicine and Health Sciences, aimed at enhancing the state’s capacity for healthcare research and advanced medical practice.
Abayomi also acknowledged the significance of private-sector investment in driving healthcare innovation, specifically praising Aliko Dangote for his contributions to the summit. He noted that Dangote’s vision aligns with the state government’s strategy to cultivate a healthier and more productive society.
He underscored that achieving healthcare transformation requires collaboration among researchers, universities, healthcare providers, technology firms, pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory bodies. Platforms like the summit offer invaluable opportunities for knowledge exchange and partnerships that could accelerate healthcare innovation throughout Africa.
The commissioner expressed appreciation for Atunse Healthcare Limited’s role in organizing the summit, describing it as a vital forum for discussing the continent’s healthcare future. “As the governor reminded us, the future of healthcare will be shaped not just by the facilities we construct, but by the knowledge we produce and the partnerships we build,” he said.
Abayomi called for sustained investment in medical innovation and healthy aging, emphasizing that the goal is to ensure Africans not only live longer but also enjoy healthier, more fulfilling lives.
