Public Affairs Analyst Calls for Halt to State Policing Policy
Chris Emejuru, a public affairs analyst and leader of the opposition Action Democratic Party (ADP), has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to suspend the proposed state policing policy.
In a statement released on Sunday, Emejuru argued that the government’s resources should be redirected to address the widespread poverty affecting many Nigerians. His comments come as the State Police Bill is currently undergoing constitutional review in both chambers of the National Assembly and has already been sent to the 36 state Houses of Assembly for consideration.
Emejuru criticized the bill, stating, “No amount of bullets, weapons, or tanks will put food in the stomach of a desperate youth.” He emphasized that the administration’s primary concern should be alleviating poverty to effectively reduce insecurity.
He cautioned that while state policing has potential benefits, it will not resolve all security challenges facing the nation. Emejuru highlighted the need for safeguards within the proposed reforms to prevent corruption before the state policing system is implemented.
“The issue regarding state policing in Nigeria should proceed with caution,” he said. “Tackling poverty should be the primary issue that needs to be addressed in Nigeria.”
