Islamic scholars can provide better leadership than politicians – Gumi
Kaduna Scholar Advocates for Greater Involvement of Islamic Leaders in Politics
Kaduna-based Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has put forth the argument that Islamic scholars possess the potential to offer superior leadership compared to professional politicians, citing their religious knowledge and moral training as key advantages.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Gumi emphasized the need for Islamic scholars across Nigeria to engage more actively in the political landscape. He argued that Islamic doctrine does not prohibit scholars from participating in politics or holding public office.
Gumi encouraged the Ulama, or religious scholars, to expand their contributions beyond religious affairs to include influential roles in governance. “Islamic scholars can bring stronger moral values and a greater sense of responsibility to governance because of their knowledge of Islamic teachings and fear of God,” he stated.
He posited that faith-based leadership is likely to foster a heightened awareness of civic duties among elected officials. Gumi called for Islamic scholars to consider running for office or seeking appointments, rather than leaving the political arena to professional politicians exclusively.
He further asserted that increased participation by Islamic scholars could lead to improved governance and enhanced accountability in public affairs. “Political leadership should not be seen as the exclusive responsibility of professional politicians. Islamic scholars, like other citizens, also have a role to play in providing leadership and contributing to the development of society,” Gumi concluded.
