Federal Government Launches Platform to Enhance Family Planning and Health Coordination
The Federal Government has inaugurated a high-level inter-ministerial platform aimed at improving coordination in family planning, healthcare, and human capital development across Nigeria. The launch took place in Abuja and was led by Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare.
During the event, Pate underscored the importance of Nigeria’s growing population, currently estimated at 230 million, which is projected to reach between 450 million and 500 million by 2050. He noted that this demographic could serve as a significant asset if supported by investments in health, education, and productivity.
Pate characterized family planning, reproductive health, maternal and child health, girls’ education, and youth empowerment as interconnected elements of human capital development that necessitate coordinated governmental efforts. The new platform is designed to align the priorities of various ministries and agencies while enhancing accountability and facilitating actionable interventions.
“The success of this initiative will be evaluated based on measurable outcomes rather than simply meetings and discussions,” Pate said, highlighting the need for tangible results.
He also announced advancements related to the domestic production of family planning commodities, an initiative intended to decrease Nigeria’s reliance on imports, create jobs, and retain economic value within the country. Pate called for ongoing funding and effective implementation at state and local levels to ensure that national policies lead to positive changes for the populace.
Dr. Alain Damiba, Managing Director of the North, West, and Central Africa Regional Hub of Family Planning 2030, commended the government’s efforts in establishing the platform. He described family planning as a collective responsibility that represents a strategic investment in human capital, benefiting not only healthcare but also education, economic productivity, and family well-being.
Daju Kachollom S., the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, represented by Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Ozi, the Director of Family Health, emphasized that improved health outcomes require coordinated policies, aligned investments, effective partnerships, and shared accountability.
Participants at the event reaffirmed their commitment to collaborative efforts and coordinated investment strategies focused on strengthening family planning initiatives, enhancing health outcomes, and fostering human capital development for a healthier, more productive Nigeria.
