NSCDC Deploys 10,000 Personnel for Election Security in Osun State
The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has announced the deployment of 10,000 personnel from ten state commands to bolster security operations in Osun State during the upcoming electoral process.
Babawale Afolabi, an Assistant Commandant at the National Public Relations Office, stated in a press release on Monday that the enhanced security measures, effective immediately, aim to ensure that voters, electoral officials, observers, journalists, and residents can participate in the elections without fear or intimidation.
Personnel from Oyo, Ondo, Ekiti, Ogun, Lagos, Kwara, Edo, Kogi, Delta, and the Federal Capital Territory will contribute approximately 1,000 officers each. They will join forces with the Osun State Command and other law enforcement agencies tasked with maintaining order during the elections.
The deployment will include specialized units such as the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (SIS), Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit, Specialized Female Squad, Mining Marshals, Special Strike Force, Crack Squad, and a K9 Unit. These teams will enhance security through intelligence gathering, crime prevention, crowd control, and the protection of critical assets.
To ensure effective coordination, Deputy Commandant General Ayuba Phillip will relocate to Osun State, joined by designated Assistant Commandants General and other senior officers to supervise security operations.
Prof. Audi assured residents that the NSCDC would maintain professionalism and impartiality throughout the electoral process. He emphasized the agency’s commitment to safeguarding election materials and ensuring the safety of electoral officials and the public.
“Our personnel have been briefed on the importance of professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights,” Audi stated. He warned that any attempts to disrupt the electoral process would not be tolerated, and those engaging in criminal activities would face legal consequences as outlined in the Electoral Act.
The NSCDC has called on political parties, candidates, supporters, and residents to remain calm and allow the democratic process to unfold peacefully. The agency will collaborate closely with the Nigeria Police Force, military, and other security organizations to ensure effective coordination and maintain a peaceful electoral environment across the state’s 30 local government areas.
Residents are encouraged to cooperate with security personnel and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
