NCCSALW tasks NYSC members with tackling arms proliferation in North-East

The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has called on members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in the North-East to actively engage in initiatives aimed at reducing the spread of illegal firearms in the region.

Major General Abubakar Adamu (retd.), the North-East Zonal Director of NCCSALW, delivered this message during a recent address at NYSC orientation camps in Potiskum, Yobe State, and Maiduguri, Borno State. He was represented by Aminu Saleh Mohammed, the center’s Assistant Director of Strategic Communication and Information.

Adamu emphasized the critical role that youth can play in addressing the region’s security challenges. He explained that the NCCSALW, established in 2021 under the Office of the National Security Adviser, is responsible for the regulation and control of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria.

During the sensitization program held in Yobe, Adamu warned that the circulation of illegal firearms exacerbates issues such as banditry, kidnapping, cultism, political violence, and insurgency. He urged corps members to act as responsible representatives of their communities, encouraging them to report any individuals found in possession of or involved in the manufacturing of illegal arms.

Additionally, Adamu urged parents and guardians to cultivate an environment of tolerance and peaceful coexistence, suggesting they monitor for behavioral changes among children and address negative tendencies early.

In Maiduguri, the NCCSALW also reached out to religious leaders and scholars, asking them to educate their congregations about the threats posed by illicit arms. Stephen Inau Mshelia, the center’s Chief Programme Officer for Intelligence, represented Adamu and called on religious figures to assist in the reconciliation and reintegration of extremists and victims.

In response, NYSC coordinators in Yobe and Borno states, Okochi Okpara and Nasir Bello, expressed support for the proposal to establish Small Arms and Light Weapons Community Development Service groups, affirming their commitment to collaborate with NCCSALW on awareness campaigns throughout the region.
