Russia, Ukraine Agree to Three-Day Ceasefire in Capital Cities Amid Peace Talks
Moscow, Russia – September 5, 2026 — Russian President Vladimir Putin has initiated discussions with U.S. envoys regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted for over four years. The U.S. delegation, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is expected to visit Kyiv on Sunday.
During a meeting at the Kremlin on Saturday, Putin welcomed the U.S. officials, acknowledging the complexities surrounding the negotiation process. “Dear colleagues, I warmly welcome you to Moscow. The situation is, of course, not simple,” he stated.
As part of the negotiations, both Russia and Ukraine have committed to a temporary halt in military actions against each other’s capitals for three days. This ceasefire is intended to facilitate U.S.-led discussions aimed at bringing an end to the conflict, which is recognized as Europe’s most significant military confrontation since World War II.
Earlier, former U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that Kushner and Witkoff were carrying a proposal aimed at resolving the conflict. Putin expressed gratitude for Trump’s message, relaying best wishes to the U.S. President.
Witkoff conveyed Trump’s appreciation for the limited ceasefire during the delegation’s visit. In response, Putin assured the U.S. team of Russia’s commitment to ensuring their safety throughout the talks.
The backdrop to these discussions is a conflict that has escalated over the summer, leading to significant civilian casualties. On Saturday, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian strikes resulted in at least seven fatalities in areas including the Kyiv suburbs.
The Kremlin announced that it would refrain from striking Kyiv starting at midnight on Saturday. Concurrently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Ukraine would also cease strikes on Moscow until Monday. “The Russian president, the commander-in-chief, has given the order… not to strike Kyiv for three days,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated.
Zelensky confirmed his dialogue with U.S. officials and pledged that Ukraine would not conduct any strikes against Moscow. “From now through the end of Saturday, as well as on Sunday and Monday, Ukraine is ready to refrain from strikes on Moscow,” he posted on social media.
This upcoming visit marks the first time Witkoff and Kushner have traveled to Kyiv since Trump returned to office last year with a commitment to resolving the ongoing conflict.
