Yobe State Assembly Advances Bill for Biomedical Engineering Institute
The Yobe State House of Assembly has expedited the consideration of a bill proposing the establishment of an Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Science and Technology within the state.
The bill, introduced by the executive branch of the government, passed its second reading on Tuesday after thorough discussions among assembly members.
Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf, the Leader of the House, emphasized that the proposed institute aims to enhance the state’s healthcare system by training skilled technicians for the maintenance and use of medical equipment.
“The institute would provide both full-time and part-time programs, foster research and innovation, develop technical skills, create employment opportunities for youth, and contribute to the state’s economic growth,” Hon. Yusuf stated.
If enacted, Yobe would be the first state in Nigeria to establish such an institute.
Contributing to the debate, representatives from Gujba, Mamudo, Bade West, and Nguru II constituencies—including Bulama Bukar, Mohammed Isa Bello, Sanda Kara Bade, and Musa Lawan Majakura—characterized the initiative as a forward-looking investment in healthcare and human capital development.
Speaker of the House Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio noted that the bill’s passage marks significant progress in addressing the shortage of qualified personnel to operate advanced medical equipment in the state’s healthcare facilities.
The Speaker subsequently referred the bill to the House Standing Committee on Higher Education for further legislative review.
