Nollywood producers will run away from YouTube if dollar exchange rate crashes – Kunle Afolayan
Filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has voiced concerns regarding the trend among Nollywood producers to utilize YouTube as a primary streaming platform. In a recent interview with Kemi Adeosun, a former Minister of Finance, Afolayan emphasized that YouTube cannot compete with established streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon Prime in terms of content delivery and viewer experience.
While acknowledging that YouTube serves as an accessible entry point for emerging filmmakers—particularly those lacking the resources to negotiate with larger platforms—Afolayan expressed skepticism about its long-term viability for serious producers. “Nollywood producers rushing to YouTube is not the way to go. YouTube provides flexibility and an avenue for everyone to showcase their work. However, it cannot deliver the same benefits as Netflix and Prime,” he said.
Afolayan pointed out that economic factors, particularly the current dollar-to-naira exchange rate, are driving many producers to seek revenue through YouTube. “Nigerian filmmakers are turning to the platform due to the high dollar exchange rate. At ₦1,400 to $1, a million views can generate about $10,000. However, if the dollar were to fall to ₦200, many would likely abandon YouTube,” he warned, adding his hopes for a reduction in the exchange rate.
