Peter Obi convoy attack: Ten youths reportedly hospitalised
Over Ten Injured in Attack on Peter Obi’s Convoy
MAKURDI, Nigeria – More than ten youths were injured during an attack on the convoy of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), on Tuesday. The injured individuals were transported to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) for medical care.
The incident occurred along the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway, where Obi was en route to Yelwata in Guma Local Government Area to extend condolences to victims of a terrorist attack on June 13, 2025. The convoy was blocked by a group of thugs, preventing Obi from continuing his journey.
In a statement following the incident, Obi accused the Special Assistant to Governor Hyacinth Alia on Youths of orchestrating the attack and rallying local youths to impede his progress.
An official at BSUTH, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed that over ten victims were admitted for urgent medical treatment. “They are accident victims and are responding to treatment. None of them have died,” the official stated, although they were unable to confirm whether the victims were directly involved in the attack on Obi’s convoy.
Attempts to reach Dr. Stephen Hwande, the Chief Medical Director of BSUTH, for official confirmation were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
Additionally, Agile-Bem Jabez Ordedoo, the NDC’s publicity secretary for Benue State, released a statement on Wednesday claiming that one of the alleged attackers had died while receiving treatment at the hospital. “We regret to announce that one of the young men involved in the attack on the Presidential and Governorship candidates of the NDC has passed away this morning,” Ordedoo said.
