Lagos Police Officers Ordered to Appear Before Commissioner Following Assault Allegations
The Lagos State Police Command has instructed several officers, accused of assaulting an individual, Olugbenga Adeleke, to report to the Commissioner of Police. This action follows the release of a video in which Adeleke recounts his alleged mistreatment by police personnel.
Abimbola Adebisi, spokesperson for the command, confirmed on Friday that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ebenezer Police Station in the Alagbado/Ojokoro area has been directed to present the officers involved on Monday, September 14, 2026.
Adeleke, a resident of the Akera Tide community in Lagos, has penned a petition to Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu and various human rights organizations. He alleges that officers from the Ebenezer Police Station assaulted, unlawfully detained, and extorted him.
In his account, Adeleke stated that on September 6, 2026, while returning home, he was stopped by individuals not in police uniform. He claimed that before he could understand the reason for the stop, one of the men struck him, subsequently forcing him into a police vehicle and transporting him to the station.
In a social media video, Adeleke asserted that he faced further assault at the station and was detained overnight without being informed of the charges against him. He identified a team leader as “Sheri,” who he stated spoke Igbo fluently.
“I repeatedly asked what I had done and why I was there,” Adeleke said in the video. “Instead of receiving a clear explanation, I was slapped and beaten again inside the station.” He described being held overnight in a cell without any justification.
Adeleke also recounted that the following morning, he was told to sit outside under a tree. As his phone died, he was informed it would be charged so he could arrange for someone to come and bail him. “I inquired what I needed bail for, but received no satisfactory response,” he said.
He reported that he sustained a serious eye injury during the ordeal and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest and alleged assault. “Why did I have to suffer this injury without being given a clear explanation of my actions?” he questioned, appealing to the Nigeria Police Force and other authorities to take decisive action.
Adeleke further alleged that others were brought to the police station during his detention, and claimed they were also subject to extortion by the officers.
In response to the allegations, Adebisi stated that the police command initiated an investigation after the video emerged online. “The Complaint Response Unit has contacted the complainant, who has been invited but has yet to respond,” she noted.
“The Command has started its investigation, and the DPO has been instructed to present the officers involved to the Commissioner. Both parties are expected to meet at the command on Monday, September 14, 2026, for further proceedings,” Adebisi added.
