Wizkid, Wande Coal advised me on how to leave school for music – Davido
Nigerian singer David Adeleke, known professionally as Davido, has disclosed insights from his early career that involved consultations with fellow artists Wizkid and Wande Coal about balancing music and education.
In a recent episode of the Afrobeats Documentary, Davido recounted that both musicians advised him that the only path to prioritizing music over academics was to achieve significant success in the industry.
“I asked Wizkid and Wande Coal how they left school to do music. They told me the only way was to blow up,” Davido stated. He acknowledged the challenges he faced, particularly the expectation from his father to complete his education. However, following the success of his hit song, “Dami Duro,” he found it increasingly difficult to maintain his studies.
Despite leaving school initially, Davido later made a return to his education. After negotiating an agreement with his father—which included the provision of a recording studio and permission to pursue his music career—he resumed his studies. Davido ultimately earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Babcock University in 2015.
