Olu Jacobs: ‘His legacy will endure’ – Lai Mohammed reacts to death of veteran actor
LAGOS — Former Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed expressed his sorrow over the death of veteran actor Chief Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, widely known as Olu Jacobs. He described Jacobs’ passing as the conclusion of an extraordinary chapter in Nigerian theater, television, and film.
In a condolence message issued on Friday, Mohammed noted that Nigeria has lost not only a distinguished actor but also a cultural icon who showcased the nation’s creative prowess on a global scale.
“For more than five decades, Olu Jacobs brought intelligence, depth, and authenticity to every role, leaving a lasting impact on generations of Nigerians and audiences around the world,” Mohammed stated. “His journey from the British stage and television to Nollywood demonstrated that Nigerian artists could compete internationally.”
Mohammed highlighted Jacobs’ role as a connector between traditional Nigerian theater and the contemporary film industry. He praised Jacobs for his dedication to the growth of the creative sector, particularly through collaborative efforts with his wife, Joke Silva. By training aspiring performers, Jacobs contributed to the establishment of institutions and the inspiration of a new generation of artists.
The former minister emphasized that Jacobs’ career exemplified how the arts can serve as a tool for cultural diplomacy and national image-building. “He understood that culture is one of Nigeria’s greatest assets. Every time he stepped onto a stage or screen, he carried a piece of the Nigerian story, leaving a legacy that transcends any single role or award,” he said.
Mohammed extended his condolences to Joke Silva, the Jacobs family, the Nigerian creative community, and admirers of Olu Jacobs both at home and abroad.
