Cross River Police Commissioner Issues Warning Against Extortion
CALABAR, Nigeria — The Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, has issued a stern warning to police officers regarding the prohibition of demanding or collecting money from motorists and commercial transport operators during stop-and-search operations.
Ordue emphasized that no police officer is authorized to solicit payments from drivers or riders during any lawful police activity. This statement comes in response to recent complaints alleging extortion by some officers targeting commercial drivers and tricycle operators in Calabar and surrounding areas.
Represented by CSP Azenda Peter, the Divisional Police Officer of the Atakpa Police Division, Ordue delivered his remarks on Saturday during a meeting with key transport stakeholders in Calabar. He urged drivers and riders to refrain from making any payments in such situations and to report any officer who attempts to solicit money.
Despite the prohibition on extortion, the Commissioner reminded motorists and riders that they are still required to adhere to traffic laws and obey lawful directives issued by police officers.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, Ordue called on commercial drivers and tricycle operators to remain compliant with applicable road traffic laws. He warned that violations would be addressed through established legal and enforcement measures.
Ordue also reiterated the importance of professionalism, discipline, and integrity among police personnel in the performance of their duties. He assured the public that credible allegations of police misconduct would be taken seriously and managed according to the law.
The meeting included representatives from the Unified Commercial Drivers Association of Cross River State, led by State Chairman Nta Henshaw, and the Tricycle Owners Association of Nigeria, represented by Calabar South/Municipality Chairman Chief Pastor Ekpenyong Ewa.
