Nigerian govt threatens to shut Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, gives reason
The Federal Government has issued a warning stating that the Lagos section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will be closed within two weeks if motorists fail to adhere to safety measures and conditions do not improve along the route.
Olufemi Dare, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, made the announcement on Monday while inspecting the highway. The decision follows a directive from Minister of Works David Umahi, prompted by ongoing safety violations, vandalism, and other illegal activities impacting the roadway.
“Within two weeks, if there’s no improvement on all these issues, then we have no option but to come back and shut down this road,” Dare said.
Dare noted that an alternative route is available via the Lekki-Epe Expressway. He emphasized that the coastal highway remains under construction and ideally should not have been opened to traffic before the completion of its bridges.
The Lagos section of the coastal highway spans approximately 103 kilometers, divided into two sections—Section 1 measures about 47 kilometers, while Section 2 extends 56 kilometers. Dare reported that there are 20 major bridges across the two sections, with 10 in each, many of which are still under construction.
