FG working to announce new minimum wage – Shoretire
ABUJA — The Federal Government is in the process of announcing a new national minimum wage aimed at addressing the economic challenges faced by Nigerian workers.
Dr. Kamil Shoretire, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, made this statement on Tuesday during a capacity-building workshop for labor correspondents in Abuja. He indicated that consultations were currently being held to establish a timetable for negotiations regarding the new wage.
“We have yet to announce the timetable for that, but background discussions are already ongoing,” Shoretire said. He added that further details will be provided to the press once plans are solidified.
In addition to the wage discussions, the government is also addressing ongoing salary and allowance disputes in various sectors, following significant pressure from organized labor groups. These groups are advocating for a review of the current national minimum wage of N70,000, which was set by the government in 2024.
In their proposals, workers are seeking an increase of the minimum wage to N500,000, along with an additional immediate wage award. They are also calling for a reduction in petrol prices to N500 per liter.
