Students Criticized for Inspecting Road Projects
Former presidential spokesman and Arise News anchor Reuben Abati criticized the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Thursday for its recent initiative to inspect federal road projects across the country.
Abati expressed his disapproval during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, suggesting that students should prioritize their education instead of taking on roles that resemble political activism. “These are students,” he remarked. “Why are they becoming politicians going about inspecting projects and giving reports to the minister?”
NANS, led by its President Comrade Babatunde Akinteye Afeez, carried out a nationwide tour of federal road projects, focusing on areas in the North-West, including Kano, Jigawa, and Sokoto states. Following their inspections, the delegation reported that they were impressed with the quality and pace of the construction. They also noted certain areas requiring further attention, particularly pedestrian bridges near tertiary institutions.
Upon receiving the students’ findings, Minister of Works Dave Umahi acknowledged their initiative, stating that he was particularly impressed that the students independently sought access to project sites throughout all six geopolitical zones. He noted that even when his ministry offered logistical support, the students chose to forgo assistance, emphasizing their desire to conduct their own assessments.
Abati highlighted a contrast between the current activities of students and those of previous generations. “When I was a student, we were very serious; you had to stay on campus, you had to attend classes,” he said. “I find this very curious.”
