Tinubu ‘japad’ to France to do cleaning job, Nigeria ungoverned territory – Odinkalu
Human rights activist and lawyer Professor Chidi Odinkalu criticized President Bola Tinubu for his extended absence from Nigeria, likening it to the choices made by many Nigerians who seek work abroad. Odinkalu made his comments during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, addressing the president’s vacation in Europe.
Odinkalu discussed the constitutional implications of the president’s absence, which has now lasted 24 days. He noted that according to the Constitution, after 21 days, there could be a transfer of power, but he clarified that this period should be interpreted as 21 working days, which roughly translates to four calendar weeks, excluding weekends and public holidays.
The activist expressed concerns about the governance situation in Nigeria, stating, “It’s beginning to look like Nigeria is his vacation spot, and France is really where the Nigerian capital is.” He emphasized that many citizens feel the nation is effectively ungoverned, pointing to ongoing security issues as a reflection of this perceived lack of leadership.
Odinkalu drew a comparison to other leaders, pointing out that while the president of France and the prime minister of the United Kingdom are engaged in international diplomacy at the United Nations in New York, President Tinubu appears to be focusing on Europe. He remarked, “The people running the country have abdicated… to look after countries to become basically house sitters.”
He concluded by criticising the notion that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation could adequately manage the country in the president’s absence, suggesting it undermines the seriousness of governance in Nigeria.
