Lagos State Government Inspects CWAY Water Production Facility
The Lagos State Government has conducted an inspection of the CWAY water production facility following a viral social media video and multiple consumer complaints about the company’s products.
Officials from the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) carried out the inspection after meeting with CWAY management to evaluate the company’s production and distribution processes.
During the inspection, LASCOPA officials reviewed key stages of production, including bottle filling, capping, labeling, and the preparation of products for distribution. The agency also assessed CWAY’s packaging, transportation, storage, and distribution protocols.
Several unsuitable plastic packaging materials were found set aside for disposal during the inspection. CWAY representatives clarified that these discarded bottles are processed through a grinding machine and sold to plastic industries as raw materials, with approximately 1,000 bottles discarded daily.
LASCOPA officials advised the company to ensure that all packaging materials are properly cleaned and maintained. Suluka Raheem, the agency’s Director of Scientific Investigation, Research and Development, recommended that CWAY incorporate suitable handles into the bottles to minimize slippage and enhance safety during handling.
Raheem also suggested establishing an appropriate shelf-life for the bottles, emphasizing the importance of withdrawing them from circulation once that period has expired, regardless of their condition. He further urged CWAY to provide comprehensive training and sensitization for distributors on proper handling and storage practices, particularly ensuring that products are not exposed to direct sunlight during transportation.
Arinola Momoh-Ayokanmbi, LASCOPA’s Board Secretary and Head of Legal, advocated for the adoption of internationally recognized standards for the transportation, distribution, and storage of CWAY products.
She emphasized the need for the company to address the observations noted during the inspection and implement the recommendations provided by LASCOPA.
The inspection aligns with LASCOPA’s mandate to protect consumers and assess the safety of products in the state. The agency reiterated its commitment to safeguarding consumer health, safety, and interests while fostering confidence in products available across Lagos State.
