More Than 80 Shops Destroyed in Early Morning Fire in Kano State

KANO, Nigeria — An early morning fire devastated the Kasuwar Yan Katako, also known as the Timber Market, in the Rijiyar Lemo area of Ungogo Local Government on Wednesday, destroying over 80 shops.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident occurred shortly after 4:28 a.m., when they received a distress call from Kabiru Nafi’u reporting the blaze. Fire crews from the Dawanau, Rijiyar Zaki, and Bompai fire stations were promptly dispatched.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered the timber market, covering approximately 500 by 500 feet, engulfed in flames. The fire resulted in the complete destruction of about 30 permanent shops and 55 temporary structures. Three fire trucks—Com 23, Com 17, and Com 2—were utilized to combat the fire. The cause of the incident remains under investigation.

In a separate incident within the same hour, firefighting teams responded to a blaze at Zamson Filling Station along Ibrahim Taiwo Road in the Fagge Local Government Area. A petrol tanker reportedly caught fire while unloading fuel into an underground storage tank. Firefighters quickly contained the flames, which had slightly damaged parts of the tanker.

The Fire Service urged traders to inspect electrical installations at the end of business hours and recommended that filling station operators and tanker drivers adhere strictly to safety protocols while handling fuel. Residents were also encouraged to report fire incidents promptly to mitigate potential risks to life and property.
