Paul Omeje explores power, loyalty in 1980s Ibadan with crime novel Apata Boys
Nigerian novelist Paul Omeje is set to release his new crime novel, Apata Boys: Syndicate Rising, on November 3, 2026. The book is set against the backdrop of 1980s Apata and Ibadan, and explores themes of brotherhood, betrayal, ambition, and the quest for power.
Omeje’s writing career began with screenwriting after he studied Mass Communication at Auchi Polytechnic. He has since written scripts registered with the Writers Guild of America West. This background in visual storytelling influences his novel, especially in how he constructs scenes and develops tension through character interactions and action.
In Apata Boys, Omeje focuses on a community in which personal relationships and competing interests interconnect. Central to the narrative is brotherhood, which offers loyalty and protection but also faces challenges as ambition and survival demand conflicting sacrifices from those bound by it.
“Crime creates the pressure, but people are what interest me,” Omeje stated regarding his writing process. He aims to explore the dynamics of loyalty, ambition, and survival, illustrating how these factors can lead to critical choices that define character.
